The Herlingshaw family

1881 Census

The census was on the 3rd of April. Mary Shaw (née Dakin, later Wright) was now a widow again as her second husband John Wright had died, probably in 1877 or 1878. Son John Samuel had also died, in 1878 and son Joseph had moved away. The household at Snitterton, South Darley (close to Snitterton Hall) was:

Mary Wright aged 61, head, no occupation, born in Elton (d. about 1899)

James Shaw aged 24, son, unmarried, railway labourer, born in South Darley (d. 1935)

Martha E Shaw aged 15, daughter, unmarried, born in South Darley (d. 1946)

William Shaw, aged 13, son, scholar, born in South Darley

Annie L Shaw, aged 7, grand-daughter, scholar, born in South Darley

Mary E Shaw, aged 6 months, grand-daughter, born in South Darley

Annie Louisa Shaw was born Q3 1873, the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Shaw, Mary Jane's older sister from before her first marriage to Edward Ashton. Mary Elizabeth Shaw was born Q4 1880. William Shaw was born Q2 1868. Martha Elizabeth Shaw was born Q4 1865. It is not certain who were the parents of Mary E (Elizabeth) Shaw, later she was to be described as Mary Wright's niece, however it is most likely that she was another daughter of Elizabeth Ann..

Elizabeth Ann Shaw was using her married name of Ashton but her husband Edward who she married in Q1 1878 had already died as she was recorded as a widow. She was a 26 year old domestic servant in the house of Harriett J Dale at 14 School Road, Altrincham, Cheshire.

Mary Jane Shaw, daughter of John Shaw and Mary Wright (née Dakin, previously Shaw) was now 22, had left home and was a domestic servant in the Freckingham household in Matlock Bank. The owner, Richard Freckingham, was a hydropathist and it seems that he was running a hotel business related to the spa at Matlock.

Mary Jane's older brother Joseph and his wife Mary from Brassington had moved from Derbyshire to 13 Oxford Street, South Bank on Teesside, probably via some time in the Manchester area. He was 30 and a labourer at the steelworks, she was 44. They had a daughter Anna aged 7 who was at school, she was born in Wensley. There were two families living at No. 13.

Note that Anna was recorded as Emma in 1891 and Emily in 1901 - probably Emily was correct and she was known as Emma. Joseph was actually 32 and married Mary in about 1873. Upper Oxford Street in South Bank still exists and is probably part of the original road but the house at No. 13 Oxford Street was demolished. William (Herling)Shaw was not yet born but was eventually to be brought up by his Uncle Joseph and Aunt Mary.

William Shaw from Darley was living at 58 Upper Brook Street, Kings Mead, Derby:

William Shaw aged 73, head, iron turner, born in Darley, Derbyshire

Alice Shaw aged 70, wife, born in Chorley, Lancashire

Alfred Shaw aged 35, son, married, engine fitter and turner, born in Littlechester, Derby

Thomas Shaw aged 6, grandson, scholar, born in Derby

John Shaw was living at Rock Villa in Cromford Road, Wirksworth with a large family. This John Shaw was probably a son of John Shaw and Dorothy Alsopp. There is a Rock House in Cromford Road today that might be the same building.

John Shaw aged 59, head, lime stone merchant, born in Wirksworth

Hannah Shaw aged 54, wife, born in Wirksworth (née Wilde)

John Shaw aged 29, son, clerk to lime stone merchant, born in Bolehill

William Shaw aged 27, son, stone man, born in Bolehill

George Shaw aged 25, son, assistant, born in Bolehill

Frederick Shaw aged 25, son, widower, assistant, born in Bolehill

Alfred Shaw aged 23, son, joiner, born in Bolehill

James Shaw aged 21, son, joiner, born in Bolehill

Frank Shaw aged 20, son, apprentice joiner, born in Bolehill

Martha Shaw aged 18, daughter, assistant in household, born in Bolehill

Annie Shaw aged 17, daughter, assistant in household, born in Bolehill

Lizzie Shaw aged 14, daughter, scholar, born in Bolehill

Ernest Shaw aged 12, son, scholar, born in Bolehill

Caroline Peat aged 38, niece, sewing maid (servant), born in Bolehill

Mary Shaw was living in part of The Dale, Dale House, Wirksworth. She and her sister were probably daughters of a surgeon and unrelated to the family.

Mary Shaw aged 57, head, unmarried, annuitant, born in Wirksworth

Eliza Shaw aged 48, sister, unmarried, annuitant, born in Wirksworth

Agnes Doxey aged 16, servant, born in Middleton

James Shaw was running the Crown Inn in Wensley. He was probably a son of George Shaw and Sarah Taylor, grandson of George Shaw and Alice Marsden. The inn finally closed in about 1992 and was the starting point of the annual "Hospital Sunday" event during "Wakes Week" from about 1763. The old stone building is now a private home, clearly it was much modified and extended over the years.  The Crown was sold at an auction on December 16th 1873 together with over an acre of land from Wensley to Oker known as "Oker Croft" and James was probably the buyer. In 1881 the land (which was rented to William and Adam Clay) was sold.

James Shaw aged 55, head, publican, born in Wensley

Harriett Shaw aged 55, wife, born in Royston, Yorkshire

This was how the Crown Inn looked in its final days as a pub;

This is what the Crown Inn looks like nowadays as a private dwelling, seen from the other side to above.  Note that the wall bracket for the inn sign still exists. It is just off The Square in Wensley.

And this is what the Main Street in Wensley looked like in about 1910, viewed from the Crown Inn end of the road.  It doesn't look that different today.

Another James Shaw, born in Wensley, was staying with the Kirby family in Cross Green. He was a grandson of Jethro Shaw and Sarah Wall and of George Shaw and Alice Marsden, son of James Shaw and Elizabeth Shaw.

William Kirby aged 72, head, widower, retired farm bailiff, born in Rutland

Sarah Elizabeth Kirby aged 40, daughter, unmarried, born in Leicestershaire

James Shaw aged 53, lodger, unmarried, general labourer, born in Wensley

George Shaw was living in Bridgetown, South Darley, now married. He had previously been living in Oker with his brother William.

George Shaw aged 52, head, railway labourer, born in Darley

Ann Shaw aged 42, wife, born in Boothley, Lincolnshire

James S Shaw aged 4, son, born in Darley

William Shaw had moved from Oker Side to Wensley:

William Shaw aged 49, head, farmer of 7 acres, born in Wensley (d. 1903)

Sophia Shaw aged 48, wife, born in Holloway, Derbyshire (d. 1898)

Margaret M Mcarae Shaw aged 11, daughter, scholar, born in Wensley (d. 1899)

Mary Shaw (aka Mary Holmes) who had been looking after her grandparents, George and Mary Shaw (who had both died) in Two Dales, was now in Knutsford Road, Henbury, Cheshire with her new daughter:

Mary Shaw aged 26, boarder, unmarried, unemployed domestic servant, born in Ashover

Gertrude Shaw aged 1 month, daughter, born in Macclesfield

Matthias Shaw was still in Rowsley living on the Bakewell Road:

Matthias Ambrose Shaw aged 70, head, farm labourer, born in Rowsley (d. 1883)

Ann Shaw aged 65, wife, born in Derby

Edwin Shaw aged 26, son, clerk in oil firm, born in Rowsley

Phoebe Shaw died in Q2 1878 and her son-in-law Joseph Clay and daughter Sarah Hannah Shaw had taken over the farm in Wensley:

Joseph Clay aged 50, head, lead miner and farmer of 21 acres, born in Wensley (d. 26/11/1881)

Sarah Clay aged 42, wife, born in Wensley (d. 8/12/1889)

Robert Clay aged 19, son, lead miner, born in Wensley (bapt. 31/5/1863 in South Darley, d. 12/3/1890)

Mary Clay aged 15, daur, servant, born in Wensley (bapt. 3/12/1865 in South Darley, d. 19/5/1906)

Phoebe Clay aged 12, daur, scholar, born in Wensley (bapt. 19/7/1868 in South Darley)

Esther Clay aged 10, daur, scholar, born in Wensley (bapt. 26/1/1871 in South Darley)

Sarah Clay aged 7, daur, scholar, born in Wensley

William Clay aged 5, son, scholar, born in Wensley (b. 5/12/1875, bapt. 2/4/1876 in Darley)

Ann Clay aged 2, daur, born in Wensley (b. 23/5 1878, bapt. 1/9/1878 in Darley)

Most of the children had "Shaw" as their middle name. Joseph and Sarah had another child in 1881, just before Joseph died. He was called Joseph also, was bapt. 19/2/1882 (after his father's death) but died on 25/12/1899 and was buried 3 days later in Darley. Joseph and Sarah had another daughter called Sarah Shaw Clay that was bapt. on 15/4/1860.
