The Herlingshaw family


 



1871 Census

The 1871 census was on the 2nd of April. John Shaw (b. 1819) had died in 1869. His wife Mary Shaw (née Dakin) had remarried to John Wright in late 1870 in Bakewell, but John was not at home in Oker End. These folk were at home that night:

  Mary Wright aged 46, wife, occupying 4 acres of land, born in Elton (d. about 1899)

  James Shaw aged 14, son, labourer, born in Wensley (d. 1935)

  Mary Jane Shaw aged 11, daughter, scholar, born in Wensley (d. 1950)

  Martha E Shaw aged 5, son, scholar, born in Wensley (d. 1946)

  William Shaw, aged 3, son, scholar, born in Wensley

Martha Elizabeth Shaw was born Q4 1865. William Shaw was born Q2 1868. James Shaw was born Q1 1858.

 

George Shaw was still living with his wife at Two Dales Hill:

  George Shaw aged 82, head, farmer of 30 acres, born Darley (d. 1874)

  Mary Shaw aged 74, wife, born Darley (d. 1873 or 1874)

  Mary Shaw aged 17, granddaughter, "domestic housework", born Ashover

Mary Shaw aged 17 had previously been recorded as Mary Holmes. George was a son of Jethro Shaw and Sarah Wall and a brother of John Shaw who d. 1830.

 

Elizabeth Shaw (widow of Jethro) was still living at Cross Green with her son but both died before the next census:

  Elizabeth Shaw aged 66, head, widow, born Winster (née Bradley, d. 1876)

  George Shaw aged 40, son, stonemason, born Wensley (d. 1878)

George d. 14/3/1878 with a personal estate of under £20 which was administered by Henry Holmes of Darley Hill Side, a labourer. Elizabeth probably d. 1761, she was born Elizabeth Bradley.

 

The other Elizabeth Shaw was still living nearby but died the following year. She was a daughter of Jethro Shaw and Sarah Wall:

  Elizabeth Shaw aged 77, head, widow, annuitant, born Wensley (née Shaw, husband was James Shaw 1792-1860)

  James Shaw aged 42, son, agricultural labourer, born Wensley

 

Alice Marsden aged 82, annuitant, now lived in accommodation in between the two Elizabeth Shaws.

Alice died on the 5th July 1872 in Cross Green, Darley and left effects valued at under £20. George Shaw of Cross Green, a labourer was one of the executors, no doubt he was a son.

 

Phoebe Shaw, now a widow, lived in Darley but her daughter and son-in-law's family had moved in:

  Phoebe Shaw aged 77, head, widow, farmer of 11 acres, born Wensley (d. 1878)

  Joseph Clay aged 40, head, lead miner, born Wensley (d. 26/11/1881)

  Sarah Clay aged 31, miner's wife, born Wensley (d. 8/12/1889)

  Hannah S Clay aged 11, daughter, scholar, born Wensley (probably d. 1929)

  Robert S Clay aged 7, son, scholar, born Wensley (d. 12/3/1890)

  Mary S Clay aged 5, daughter, scholar, born Wensley (d. 19/5/1906)

  Phoebe S Clay aged 2, daughter, born Wensley

  Ester Clay aged 2 months, daughter, born Wensley

Sarah Clay was Robert Shaw and Phoebe's daughter Sarah Hannah Shaw, she died in 1889. Phoebe's husband Robert had died in 1863. Hannah S was Hannah Shaw Clay, Robert S was Robert Shaw Clay, Mary S was Mary Shaw Clay, Phoebe S was Phoebe Shaw Clay. Hannah Shaw Clay m. William Swift in 1885 in S. Darley.

 

Joseph Shaw lived at Darley Bridge (aka Bridgetown):

  Joseph Shaw aged 22, head, labourer, born Wensley

  Mary Shaw aged 32, wife, born Brassington, Derbyshire

Joseph was an older brother of Mary Jane Shaw, he and his wife later brought up William (Herling)Shaw on Teesside. Joseph married Mary Kirkland on 31st May 1869 at St Alkmunds in Derby. Mary was born Mary Walton and her parents were Thomas (b. 1819) and Grace Walton (b. 1818) of Brassington. Joseph declared he was 21 when married and she was 30. He was Mary's second husband, she had married David Kirkland in Ashbourne in Q4 1859 and was living with him and her young brother George Walton in Biggin in 1861. David Kirkland also remarried, to Catherine.

 

James Shaw was living at 42 King Street, Alfreton, Derbyshire

   James Shawe aged 45, head, Superintendent of County Police, born in Darley

   Harriett Shawe aged 45, wife, born in Royston, Yorkshire

James was a son of George Shaw and Sarah Taylor.

 

William Shaw was living at Oker Side:

  William Shaw aged 40, head, lead miner, born Wensley (d. 1903)

  Sophia Shaw aged 36, wife, born Holloway, Derbyshire (d. 1898)

  Margret MM Shaw aged 1, daughter, born Oker (d. 1899)

  George Shaw aged 43, brother, railway plate layer, born Wensley

William and George Shaw were both sons of George Shaw and Sarah Taylor.

 

Edward Fawley was living at Darley Bridge:

  Edward Fawley aged 46, head, labourer and farmer of 3 acres, born Wensley

  Sarah Fawley aged 42, wife, born Wensley (née Shaw, d. 1890)

  John Fawley aged 20, son, labourer, born Wensley

  Alice Fawley aged 12, daughter, scholar, born Wensley

  Jessee Fawley aged 9, son, scholar, born Wensley

  Mary E Fawley aged 7, daughter, scholar, born Wensley

  Edward G Fawley aged 2, son, born Wensley

 

Matthias Shaw was still in Rowsley:

   Matthias Ambrose Shaw aged 59, head, agricultural labourer, born in Rowsley (d. 1883)

   Ann Shaw aged 55, wife, born in Derby (d. 1890)

   Samuel Shaw aged 23, son, farm labourer, born in Rowsley

   Fanny Shaw aged 21, daur, domestic servant, born in Rowsley

   Edwin Shaw aged 16, son, railway parcel clerk, born in Rowsley

   Henry Shaw aged 12, son, scholar, born in Rowsley

   Elizabeth Shaw aged 9, daur, scholar, born in Rowsley

   Agnes Shaw aged 7, grand-daur, scholar, born in Rowsley

 

Rebecca Shaw, widow of John, had retired from life as a farmer in Rowsley and moved to the Cliff at Matlock:

   Rebecca Shaw aged 68, head, annuitant, widow, born in Derby (d. 25/12/1875)

After her death Rebecca's effects were valued at under £200 and her niece Hannah Shaw became the sole executrix.
