The Dakin Branch
John Shaw born in 1819, died 25 Oct 1869, married
Mary Dakin born 13
April 1824
on 27 Jan 1847 in Elton and were the parents of
Mary Jane Shaw. The Dakin (or Dakeyne
or Dakene) families lived in in the Darley area for hundreds of
years and one of their members invented "a hydraulic machine for
communicating motion to machinery" that was patented in 1830. However, Mary
Jane's birth certificate implies that her mother, Mary Dakin, was
illiterate and it is unlikely that this particular branch of the family was prosperous. After
her husband John Shaw died Mary Dakin married again to John Wright,
but he died soon after. Mary seems to have used the Shaw
surname again after her second husband died.
