The Herlingshaw family

The Hargreaves Connection

Robert Hargreaves (b. 1860), a dairy farmer, married Mary Jane Shaw / Herling (b. 1860) in 1927 when they were both well into their sixties and of course they did not have any children together. They both died in 1950 and almost certainly got to know each other via Mary Jane's Butchers and Commercial Inn, which was in the same street as the cattle market which Robert would have attended regularly. Robert was from a prosperous farming family based in the Preston area, initially Freckleton and nearby Kirkham, later, in the early 1800s in Woodplumpton/Barton/Broughton. Some significant sums were inherited by family members over the years.

Robert's first wife was Mary Ann Myerscough and they had three children, Thomas, Esther and Jane. Esther married John William Eccles who was a farmer. Thomas became a farmer, Jane died aged about 28.

The Hargreaves were sometimes recorded as Hargroves, but the spelling seems to have standardised by about 1800.
