James Shaw and
Hannah Roper
James Shaw, born in 1751, died 24th
January 1837 of Bolehill, a
son of Jethro Shaw and Ruth Robinson, married Hannah Roper, born
1752, died 9th December 1817 on 4th November 1773 at St Helens in Darley Dale. Their children included:
Sarah, born 29th September
1774, baptised 4th January 1775 of Bolehill, died 29th May 1789 of Bolehill.
Silence, born 16th August
1777, baptised 14th September 1777 of Bolehill (see below), died 5th
March 1828 of Bolehill, married Samuel Butler on 13th July 1796 in Wirksworth
with George Land and John Shaw as witnesses.
John, born 23rd February 1780,
died 6th March 1848 of Bolehill, married Dorothy Allsopp on 10th
December 1807 in Wirksworth. Witnesses were Ann Allsopp and Joshua
Stree.
Elizabeth, born 19th March
1783, baptised 16th April 1783 of Bolehill, died 14th April 1789 of Bolehill.
Mary, born 29th September
1786, died June 1845, married her cousin Jethro Shaw of Macclesfield.
Mary was baptised on 9th February 1787 and of Bolehill.
Thomas, born 2nd October 1789,
baptised 13th January 1790 of Bolehill", married Frances Fowlk on
8th April 1815 "of Bolehill" who was born 25th October 1790. Witnesses
were Hannah Fowlk and Elizabeth Rodgers.
Ann, born 4th September 1792,
baptised 9th November 1792 "of Bolehill, died 10th October 1817,
married Stephen Glover a printer/bookseller from Derby on 8th April
1815. Witnesses were Rebecca Cotes and James Shaw.
Samuel Butler was a miner from
Bolehill who died 28th December 1833. Samuel and Silence had a son John Butler, also
a miner, who m. Milicent Brooks and d. on 12th January 1829 aged 31.
John and Milicent had a daughter named Mary Ann. Other children of
Samuel and Silence were Ann born 21st August 1819, Elizabeth born
16th August 1816, Francis born 23rd July 1801, John born 3rd June
1797, Joseph born 5th July 1807, Martha Ann born 24th February 1811,
William born 30th April 1803, Sarah born 23rd October 1823 and
Samuel born 18th February 1813, all "of Bolehill". Sarah died 21st
March 1824.
Dorothy Alsopp was the daughter of
Dennis Alsopp of Holloway, near Matlock, a farmer. She was probably
born in 1782 and died 8th April 1833 in Steeple Grange.
Ann died in Wirksworth in 1817
aged 25, about five months after giving birth to son Stephen on 18th
March 1817. Stephen married again, to Ann Milnes.
Thomas Shaw became a cordwainer, shoe
manufacturer and saddler in Wirksworth.
Frances Fowkes was the daughter of
Thomas Fowkes of Hob Hall in Wirksworth, a farmer and maltster.
Thomas and Frances' children were
Elizabeth (b. 1818), Margaret (b. 1823), William (b. 1815), Francis
(1825) and Ann (b. 1819, d. 1825).
Mary and Jethro had a son called
Jethro born 8th August 1808 and baptised four days later of Bolehill.
Another son was James born 2nd March 1811 and baptised on 18th
September 1811 of Bolehill. A daughter was Elizabeth, born 16th July
1805, baptised 18th September 1805 of Bolehill.
