The Herlingshaw family


 



John Shaw and Dorothy Allsopp

John Shaw, born 23rd February 1777, died 6th March 1848 of Bolehill son of James Shaw and Hannah Roper, married Dorothy Allsopp on 10th December 1807 in Wirksworth. Witnesses were Ann Allsopp and Joshua Stree. John became a publican, later farmer and their children included:

  John, born 30th April 1821, baptised 24th June 1821 in Wirksworth, married Hannah Wilde. John was a farmer.

  Hannah born 11th September 1808, baptised 1st January 1809 in Wirksworth, married Joseph Edmonds a gardener on 14th July 1835 in Wirksworth. Witnesses were John Daffin and Eliza Watson.

  James (1) was born 13th October 1811 and baptised 12th January 1812 in Wirksworth. He died 7th September 1813 aged 22 months.

  James (2) was born 3rd April 1814 and was baptised 3rd July 1814 in Wirksworth. He died 31st March 1827, just before his 13th birthday.

  William was born 16th August 1816, baptised 8th December 1816 in Wirksworth, married Elizabeth Robinson. William died on 23rd September 1889 in Steeple Grange.

  Ann was born 17th February 1819, baptised 13th June 1819 in Wirksworth, married Thomas Millington Hughes on 7th November 1839 in Wirksworth. He was a chandler and the witnesses were William Shaw and Elizabeth Robinson (who later married each other).

  Phoebe died young on 31st October 1810 in Wirksworth, possibly at birth.

Dorothy Alsopp was the daughter of Dennis Alsopp of Holloway, near Matlock, a farmer. She was born about 1782 and died 8th April 1833 in Steeple Grange aged 51.

John, the husband of Dorothy Alsopp, was living at Steeple Grange in the 1841 census as a farmer aged 60 (actually 64). Dorothy had died but he was accompanied by his sons William aged 24, a maltster and John aged 20, a farmer.
