Generation 2
Jethro Shaw born in
Beeley on 16th February 1686,
died 5th February 1767
married Silence Godbehere, born 17th
September 1680, died 29th April 1726. Silence was first married to George Godbehere, a
mine owner from Cromford
but he died within a year of the marriage. Jethro and Silence married on 24th July
1707 at All Saints church in Bakewell. Her maiden name was Anable,
parents were John Anable and Elizabeth Sellars and she was born in South Wingfield
or Cromford. They had at least eleven children of which several died
at an early age. As was the custom then, the children's names were reused
for later births so there seem to have been
two named Jethro, two named John and three named Hannah.
Jervase and John, born 23rd June 1708,
twins. John probably died early.
William, born 1709, probably
in Cromford
Jethro, born 1711, probably in Cromford, died 1713
Jethro,
baptised 14th October 1713
in Darley Dale, died
3rd June 1770, married Ruth Robinson,
born 1717, in 1734
Philip, baptised 8th March
1715 in Darley Dale
Hannah, baptised 18th December 1717
in Darley Dale,
died 31st December 1718
Hannah, baptised 20th January 1719,
in Darley Dale
John, born 1720, married
Elizabeth Goodwin of Rowsley, born 1722, in 1741
Jervase, born 16th January
1723 in Wensley
Hannah, born 1726 in Darley
Dale
Six months after Silence's death
Jethro married
a second time to Ann Potter on 23rd December 1726 at St Helens in
Darley Dale. Ann died 10th April 1747.
William was baptised on 30th
November 1709 in Wirksworth. At the time his father was described as
"of Cromford".
The first Jethro child was
baptised on 31st October 1711 in Wirksworth. His father was
described then as "of Cromford".
Silence's gravestone at St Helens in
Darley Dale reads: "Here lieth the body of Silence Shaw the
wife of Jethro Shaw of Wensley who departed this life on the 26th
April 1726 who was one of the best of women. Aged 46 years".
Philip became a farrier in the army
and was noted as a "heavy imbiber of ale'". He did not marry.
Jervase married Jane Wright,
daughter of John Wright of Matlock, they had no children.
John (b. 1720) became keeper of the Red Lion
Inn, Rowsley which eventually closed in about 1828. He was also a
farmer. He and Elizabeth had a son Matthias b. c. 1744, d. 7th May
1817 (buried in Bakewell) who took over the inn and married Eunice
Smith in 1772 (also in Bakewell). Other children of John and
Elizabeth were Elizabeth, Hannah and Thomas.
Hannah Shaw (b.1726) married Robert Frost
of Bolehill, a miner who died on 14th Sep 1759 aged 33 and they had a
child. She subsequently re-married to Thomas Higton.
George Godbehere was a mine
owner who also owned Fishpool
Flats (Duffield) in Wirksworth which passed to his wife Silence
after his death. Jethro Shaw was administrator of the will. George was almost certainly related to Thomas Godbehere after whom
the "Godbehere Vein" of ore in Cromford was named, one of the
richest.
According to T.N. Ince, James Shaw
(1751-1837) said to him on 28th April 1829 that Ruth Robinson's
father was called Clarke and he was from Winster. However, there
seems to be no other evidence to support this and her name was
recorded as Robinson at her marriage and elsewhere. However, there
was a Francis Clarke using the alias "Robinson" in Winster in 1671, a John Robinson using the alias "Clarke" in 1664 and a William
Barker using the alias "Clark" in 1660 - but that was much earlier
than Ruth or her father.
Elizabeth Goodwin was a daughter
of Anthony Goodwyn.
After the first Jethro was born in
1713 his parents Jethro and Silence seem to have changed their church to
St Helen's in Darley. They probably moved home.
Jethro Shaw sr. was listed in the
1734 Electoral Register for the Wirksworth Wapentake Hundred. His
address was Okerside. His qualification to vote was given as having
land in Wensley.
