The Earliest
Records - Generation 1
The earliest semi-reliable records located so far
of the Herlingshaw family are of John Shaw who was born in Beeley,
Derbyshire on 27th September 1644. The Shaws were based
in Derbyshire in an area near to Matlock from at least this period
until William (Herling) Shaw was born in Altrincham, Cheshire in
1884. Many are no doubt still there, although most
migrated towards the parts of the country that later became more industrialised.
John Shaw married Maria Matley, also
from Beeley on 11th November 1669 at St Anne's in Baslow and they had at least two children:
Rebecca, born 10th December
1676 in Beeley
Jane, born 6th July 1679 in
Beeley
John Shaw later remarried to
Elizabeth
Gregory from the village of Froggatt on 8th July 1683, again
at St Anne's in Baslow and they had at least four children:
Elizabeth, born 12th March
1683
Jethro, born 16th February
1686 in Beeley, died 1769 in Oker, married
Silence Godbehere
Hannah, born 12th February
1689 in Beeley
Millicent, born 23rd April
1691 in Beeley, died 1693
John Shaw was
born about 1665 in Beeley and died after 1691. His grandfather
is thought to be George Shaw, born about 1598. His great-grandparents
might have been John Shaw and Mary Wood.
Elizabeth Gregory is thought to be
born 19th June 1659 and her father John Gregory, born about 1625.
