The Herlingshaw family

1901 Census

The census was on the 31st of March, a couple of months after the death of Queen Victoria. Mary Wright (née Dakin, previously Shaw) had died, probably in 1899. Mary Jane Shaw, her daughter, had been married for five years and was now Mary Jane Herling, living with her family at 67 Victoria Grove, Bolton. The household was:

George M Herling aged 28, head, domestic coachman, born in Colchester (d. 1914)

Mary Jane Herling aged 35, wife, born in Okerside, Derbyshire (d. 1950)

Alice Shaw Herling aged 10, daughter, born in Elton, Derbyshire

James Leslie Herling aged 4, son, born in Manchester

George Milward Herling aged 2, son, born in Bolton

Richard Dewhurst, aged 20, brother-in-law, groom (non-domestic), born in Hothersall, Lancashre

Clearly Mary Jane's age was understated by some six years. James Leslie was born on 5th April 1897 and baptised at St Paul's Brunswick Street, Manchester on 20th June 1897. Alice Shaw had been renamed to reflect her mother's marriage. The family appeared to have stayed in South Manchester during their migration from Derbyshire to Bolton. There were Herling family members in Chorlton and Mary Jane's first son William (Herlingshaw) was born in Altrincham. 67 Victoria Grove, Bolton, a typical small Victorian terraced house, still exists today relatively unchanged externally. This is a picture of two houses in that street in 2009.

Richard Dewhurst was a son of William Dewhurst, the publican second husband of Mary Herling, (née Kerr), George M Herling's mother. Either William's first wife or Mary Kerr was his mother. When William Dewhurst remarried in Q1 1883 in Fylde his new wife gave her name as Mary Millward Herling.

The Golden Ball in Garstang was no longer occupied by William Dewhurst and his wife Mary (previously Kerr and Herling). It seems that William died in 1894. Mary was living at 182 Watling Street Road in Fulwood, a 56 year-old widow operating as a provision dealer from her home. John Sumner, previous owner of the hotel with his name lived close by at No. 178.

Mary Dewhurst died on 30 March 1913 aged 69 and is buried at St John the Baptist, Broughton.

Mary Jane's brother Joseph Shaw and his wife Mary (née Walton, also Kirkland from Brassington) were still on Teesside but had moved back to South Bank, now at 37 Cleveland Street (which no longer exists).  He was 50 and a labourer at the steelworks, she was 61. However, their son-in-law William H Drury from Lincolnshire, a labourer at the jetty was now listed as aged 31 and head of the household. His wife aged 26 was described as Emily, born in Manchester. William Shaw was no longer living with his surrogate parents and may have been in the Army in the second Boer War. He has not been located.

Emily Peacock Shaw married William Herbert Drury in Q4 1893 in Middlesbrough, she was also listed at different times as Anna and Emma. William Herbert Drury was born in Horncastle in Lincolnshire in 1870 or 1871. His parents were Thomas (b. 1845) and Sarah Ann (b. 1846) and the family was living in Normanby in the 1881 census which gives his birthplace as West Ashby. William Herbert Drury seems to have died in Middlesbrough in 1930.

Mary E(lizabeth) Shaw, granddaughter of John Shaw and Mary Shaw (née Dakin, also Wright), born in Oker, Matlock was now 20 and a domestic servant at the William Elliott household at 15 South Street, Chesterfield.

Mary Jane's brother James Shaw was still living in the 4 room house in Foundry Street, Whittington with his family:

James Shaw aged 41, head, iron foundry labourer, born in Darley

Charlotte Shaw aged 37, wife, born in Brampton

John S Shaw aged 11, son, born in Whittington

Hannah M Shaw aged 9, daughter, born in Whittington

Alfred J Shaw aged 2, son, born in Whittington

Joseph Rodgers aged 53, boarder, iron moulder, born in Newbold

Alfred J Woodhouse aged 35, boarder, grocer's traveller, born in Clay Cross

James Shaw and Joseph Rodgers were almost certainly working at the Sheepbridge Iron Foundry in Whittington.

Mary Jane's brother George Henry Shaw was living in Dick Lant with his family:

George Henry Shaw aged 46, head, coal miner / hewer, born in Matlock

  Emma Shaw aged 46, wife

George Shaw aged 20, son, gritstone quarry man, born in Mickley, Shirland

Mary AR Shaw aged 14, daughter, born in Handley

Hannah Shaw aged 11, daughter, born in Handley

Edwin Shaw aged 7, son, born in Ashover

Sarah J Shaw aged 4, daughter, born in Ashover

Mary AR Shaw married John G Holmes in Chesterfield in Q1 1911.

Mary Jane's sister Elizabeth Ann was living with her second husband James Smedley in Stonebroom, Shirland but the children had left home:

James Smedley, aged 44, head, coal hewer, born in Wirksworth

Elizabeth Smedley, aged 44, wife, born in Darley

James Shaw was still in Wensley, in the Main Road next door to the Wesleyan Chapel:

James Shaw aged 75, head, retired superintendent of county police, born in Wensley

Hannah Shaw aged 64, wife, born in Manchester

The Crown Inn in Wensley was still being run by William Shaw although his wife and daughter had both died:

William Shaw aged 70, head, widower, licensed victualler, born in Wensley (d. 1903)

William R I Shaw aged 11, grandson, born in Wensley

Emma Shaw aged 57, sister-in-law, widow, housekeeper, born in Wensley

Edward John Milward Herling, Mary Jane's brother-in-law, had married Elizabeth Berry in 1898 in Clitheroe and he was now the owner of the Sumner Hotel in Fulwood, near Preston. The household included his younger sister Frances:

Edward Herling aged 31, head, hotel proprietor, born in India

Elizabeth Herling aged 32, wife, born in Chipping, Lancashire

Edward Herling aged 1, son, born in Fulwood

Frances Herling aged 23, sister, confectioner / baker, born in Fulwood

Emma G King aged 27, servant / barmaid, born in Burnley

Geo Walmsley aged 22, servant / barman, born in Preston

William Cronan aged 15, servant / barman, born in Fulwood

Georgina Nicol aged 26, servant / housemaid, born in Liverpool

There were also six boarders, mostly from the army and obviously connected with the barracks across the street.

George Henry Walmsley married Frances Jane Milward Herling later that year and he became a publican himself in Preston. George died in 1928 and Frances in 1944, both in Preston.

Matthias Ambrose Shaw's son Edwin had died in 1895 and his wife Catharine had moved back to Pendleton where some of her children had been born. Perhaps they had only returned to Rowsley when Edwin's mother Ann died in 1890.

Kate Shaw aged 37, head, widow, born in Ireland

Fanny Shaw aged 18, daur, draper's assistant, born in Salford

Edwin Shaw aged 17, son, turner/fitter, born in Pendleton

Arthur Shaw aged 14, son, draper's assistant, born in Pendleton

Joseph Shaw aged 8, son, born in Pendleton

Kathleen Shaw aged 6, daur, born in Pendleton

Alexander Shaw aged 36, boarder, earthenware packer, born in Heywood

Thomas Clay and his wife Mary Shaw Clay were living in Main Road, Wensley:

Thomas Clay aged 36, head, foreman lead miner - underground, born in Wensley (d. 6/10/1928, buried 10/10/1928 at South Darley)

Mary Clay aged 35, wife, born in Wensley (d. 19/5/1906)

Sarah Clay aged 11, daur, born in Wensley

William Clay aged 25, brother-in-law, lead miner - surface, born in Wensley (d. 27/12/1935, buried 4/1/1936)

Robert Hargreaves, who was later to marry Mary Jane Shaw / Herling, was living at Boyses Farm in Durton Lane, Broughton, north of Preston with his first wife and three children:

Robert Hargreaves, aged 40, head, farmer, born in Woodplumpton

Mary A Hargreaves, aged 37, wife, born in Fulwood (d. 1925)

Esther Hargreaves, aged 12, daur, born in Broughton

Jane Hargreaves, aged 10, daur, born in Broughton

Thomas Hargreaves, aged 8, son, born in Broughton (b. 29/10/1892)

Herbert Parkinson, aged 17, farm servant, born in Woodplumpton

The following people may or may not be related to the family but were Shaws born in Darley:

Phineas Shaw aged 21, born in Darley was living in an institution (army barracks?) in New Windsor, Berkshire. He was the son of Henry William Shaw of Alfreton, born 1846 and Elizabeth of Cadnor Park, born 1843. He was a brother of Elizabeth, Henry, Robert and John Ludlam Shaw.

Elizabeth J Shaw aged 23, born in Darley was living in Chorlton-upon-Medlock (South Manchester) with her parents Alfred aged 50 and Mary aged 57 with sister Helen May and brother Herbert. Alfred was born in Winster.

William A Shaw aged 24, born in Darley was head of household in Didsbury (South Manchester) living with his wife Rebecca. He was probably a son of Alfred (b. 1851) and Mary (b.1845) Shaw. Alfred was born in Winster.

Samuel Shaw aged 51, born in Darley was head of household in Nottingham NE with his wife Elizabeth and son Thomas E.

Robert Shaw aged 24, born in Darley was head of household in Nottingham SE living with his wife Emma and daughter Annie.

Annie Dewhurst aged 28 was living as a "companion" with 48 year old Helene Turner in Bexhill.
