1939 "Census"
(Registration)
This wasn't officially a census but
rather a
registration record of all the people living in the UK on September
29th 1939 - due to the start of WWII earlier that month. Only two Herlingshaw
residences were listed and many of the registration entries were
later hidden and "officially closed" to protect the details of
people that potentially could have military involvement during the
war. There are four blacked-out entries at
129 Birchington Avenue. No doubt they were William jr. (b. 1920), Louis Raymond (b. 1922),
Ivy (b.1927) and Clifford (b. 1933).
41 million people were recorded in total.
The 1931 Census records were
destroyed by WWII bombs and the 1941 Census didn't happen for obvious
reasons. The 1921 census is not yet fully released due to the 100 year
rule. The 1939 Registration data was used for many purposes
including wartime ID cards and later, on after the war, initial NHS
registration records.

may not now exist.

light industrial premises.
"Oakerside", Sharoe Green Lane,
Fulwood
Robert Hargreaves
b. 26 April 1860, Farmer (Retired), Married
Mary J Hargreaves
b. 14 February 1861, Unpaid domestic duties, Married
There were three
other people living in the house, Mary E Clayton (born 1871, retired
licensed victualler), Patricia D Parker (born 1930, at school) and Mary A Mansby
(born 1902, housekeeper). Patricia later became Patricia
Hopkins, after marriage to Dennis A Hopkins in 1950 - her mother's surname
was Clayton so presumably she was a granddaughter of Mary E. The house still exists
but at that time the Hargreaves' address was "Oakerside"
whereas the others lived at No. 11 - so the house seems to have been
divided into two. In 1950 Robert was recorded as having lived at 11A. It does not seem
that Robert's daughter Esther was living at no. 7 in 1939, as
she was later.
Mary Elizabeth Clayton was married
to John Frederick Clayton and together they ran The Balmoral Hotel
at 27 Manchester Road, Preston from 1910. But John died in 1914 and
Mary continued running the pub until 1927 (both circumstances
remarkably similar to those of Mary Jane). Later Mary moved to
"Dudley Dene", an unidentified property also in Sharoe Green Lane but
she died on 30 April 1945
leaving £17,089 0s 11d to her two daughters, Gertrude and Winifred.
"Dudley Dene" was obviously a family property as Mary's maiden name
was Dudley. Although it is possible that the name was simply applied to the
other half of the same house as "Oakerside".

(Wallis) b. March 1926, At school, Single
Alfred J Shaw b.

45 Racecourse Road still
exists. Eileen married Alan Flavell Wallis (b. 17 Feb 1927) on 12 March 1949
in Chesterfield, he died in 2005.
John Samuel Shaw was known as "Jack" and died in 1956, his
wife Dora née Cooke died in the same year. Charles William
died in 1983. Alfred James died in 1974. John, Charles and Alfred
were brothers, they had two sisters, Hannah Maria and Maria Eleanor
(or Maria Elizabeth) and they were the children of James Shaw and
Charlotte Slater. The birthdates in this entry do not correspond
exactly with other records

Ainslie Road is a turning off
Addison Road / Blackpool Road in Fulwood and is made up of two-storey terraced
houses, no. 13 still exists. It was a short walk from the location
of the Butchers and Commercial Inn. Obviously the
"club" was elsewhere - almost certainly the
Conservative Club in Moor Park, Addison Road (later named Blackpool
Road) in Fulwood. Nowadays the location it is called the "Moor Park Sports
and Social Club".
Broughton Lodge, Garstang Road,
Preston
Edward J Millward Herling b. 18 January 1900, Bank cashier, retired, Single
Annie E
Tyson b. 31 Jan 1887, Housekeeper (Paid), Single
Broughton Lodge still exists and
is a very distinguished Edwardian five bedroom detached house with a
circular drive. Edward had presumably inherited it and more from his father who
had recently died, as he was retired at only 39.
Ashover Hay (near Chesterfield)
George H
Shaw b. 1 August 1854, Coal miner (Retired), Married
Fanny S Shaw
b. 18 Feb 1882, Unpaid domestic duties, Married
If Fanny was married to George
Henry she was not his first wife, that was Emma who probably d.
1923. It has not been possible to identify the exact dwelling but it
might still exist. Ashover Hay is the name of a single-track country
lane in the hamlet of Ashover Hay.
155 Lytham Road, Preston
James L

County Council, Married (ARP voluntary worker)
Annie L
Herling (Lena A ?) b. 29 November 1900, Unpaid domestic duties,
Married

"between-the-wars" semi-detached house that still exists.
164 Peterborough Road, Kensington,
London
Mary E Day (Wilson) b.
10 December 1900, Cook and general, Married
Francis Wilson b. 13
February 1907, Postman, Single
Phyllis M Day (Herlingshaw)
b. 17 January 1924, Junior clerk, Single
Phyllis's surname "Day"
was crossed out and "Herlingshaw" inserted. Phyllis and Louis
Raymond did not marry until 1944 and she was only 15 in 1939.
The records were updated during and after the war as they became
used for multiple purposes.
Similarly Mary E Wilson was
originally written as "Mary E Day" before
some later maintenance edits. Mary E Day and Francis Wilson married in 1940 in
Kensington. 164 Peterborough Road seems to have been re-developed as
office premises, previously it was a Victorian-era multi-occupancy terraced building
