The Herlingshaw family


 



1851 Census

The John Shaw and John Lomas families lived in the same household in Wensley on census night, 31st March 1851, as they did in 1841. However, mother Mary Shaw (née Wagstaff) and her son George were no longer living with them.

  Mary Shaw aged 25, wife, born in Elton

  Joseph Shaw aged 2, son, born in Wensley

  John S Shaw aged 5 months, son, born in Wensley (bapt. 8/12/1850 in South Darley)

  John Lomas aged 34, lodger, flax dresser, born in Darley

  Elizabeth Lomas aged 36, wife (of John Lomas), born in Wensley

  Ellen Lomas aged 8, daughter (of John + Elizabeth Lomas), born in Wensley

  John Lomas aged 5, scholar, son (of John + Elizabeth Lomas), born in Wensley

  George Lomas aged 1, (son of John + Elizabeth Lomas), born in Wensley

Elizabeth Lomas was one of John Shaw's sisters, born in Oakerside on 19/6/1814. She married John Lomas of Toadholes, b. 29/7/1816 at Darley on 8/10/1838. Their son Joseph who was listed in the 1841 census was now with his grandmother. Mary Shaw above was née Dakin. To one side the neighbour was William Clay and his family, a farmer of 118 acres. On the other side was Grace Dickens a widow and pauper whose husband had been a miner. Next along was John Derbyshire, a farmer of 100 acres who employed one farm labourer, probably John Shaw. Joseph Shaw was born Q2 1848. John Samuel Shaw was born Q4 1850. A John Samuel Shaw b. about 1847 d. 14/4/1901 in Pinxton. aged about 54

 

Mary Shaw (née Wagstaff) (63) still lived with her son George (23) and also still with grandson Joseph L Lomas (11) but no longer with son John. Their location was now described as Wensley Dale.

   Joseph L Lomas aged 11, grandson, born in Wensley

Mary died in April 1852 in Darley and was the widow of John Shaw, b. 1790 who she married in 1813 in Darley Dale. Joseph Lomas died on 24/6/1855 in Wensley, he was a son of John Lomas and Elizabeth Shaw.

 

Sarah Shaw lived in Wensley and all her household were born there:

   Sarah Shaw aged 52, widow, pauper (d. 1864)

   George Shaw aged 22, son, lead miner

   William Shaw aged 20, son, lead miner

   Francis Shaw aged 12, son

   Edmond Shaw age 10, son, scholar

   Lydia H Shaw aged 7, daughter, scholar

Sarah was Sarah Taylor born 1798 who married George Shaw in 1824. but he died in 1850. Edmund Shaw was born Q2 1841. Lydia Hannah Shaw was born Q1 1844. She probably m. George Holmes on 22/12/1867 in South Darley.

 

Elizabeth Shaw (née Bradley) lived in Cross Green, close to Wensley:

  George Shaw aged 20, son, agricultural labourer, born in Cross Green

  Mary A Shaw aged 17, daughter, worker at flax factory, born in Cross Green (Mary Ann)

  John Shaw aged 13, son, errand boy, born in Cross Green

  Alice Shaw aged 10, daughter, scholar, born in Cross Green

Elizabeth Shaw's was the widow of Jethro Shaw, the second son called Jethro of George Shaw and Alice Marsden. He was a lead miner and was born about 1803 and seems to have died around 1840. Jethro and Elizabeth had another daughter, Sarah, who was 2 years older than George and who married Edward Fawley. They had a son Jethro who died aged 1, a later son Jethro died aged 3. Another son, William, died aged 16 in a coal accident in 1843. Elizabeth died in 1876. Mary A was Mary Ann.

 

James Shaw was living next door to Elizabeth in Cross Green:

   James Shaw aged 58, head, lead miner, born in Cross Green

   Elizabeth Shaw aged 57, wife, born in Cross Green

   James Shaw aged 23, lead miner, born in Cross Green

James snr. was a son of George Shaw and Alice Marsden, b. 1792, d. 1860. Elizabeth was Elizabeth Shaw, b. 1793, a daughter of Jethro Shaw and Sarah Wall.

 

Sarah Shaw was living in Wensley, now as Sarah Fawley with her new husband:

   Edward Fawley aged 26, head, agricultural labourer, born in Wensley

   Sarah Fawley aged 22, wife, born in Wensley

   William Fawley aged 3, son, born in Wensley

   John Fawley aged 9 months, son, born in Wensley

 

Robert Shaw lived in Wensley, his father James Shaw d. 1844 and mother Hannah (née Roper) d. 1850:

   Robert Shaw aged 54, head, farmer of 15 acres of land, born in Wensley

   Pheby Shaw aged 55, wife, born in Wensley

   Sarah A Shaw aged 12, daur, born in Wensley (Sarah Hannah, d. 11/12/1889)

   Elizabeth Taylor aged 11, lodger

Robert married Phoebe Fawley on 14/7/1830 in Darley, she seems to have d. 8/5/1878 in Darley aged 85. Robert probably d. 21/3/1863 in Darley aged 66. Sarah Hannah Shaw was born Q3 1839 and married Joseph Clay of Wensley on 14/2/1859 - he was the son of Abraham Clay, a farmer. Elizabeth was probably from one of the Taylor households next door but one on both sides. The Taylor family had many branches locally and were also connected to the Shaws as below:

 

William Shaw, originally of Derby was in Kilbourne, Derbyshire living alone:

   William Shaw aged 36, head, gardener, born in Darley

 

George Shaw, son of Jethro Shaw and Sarah Wall, was still in Two Dales:

   George Shaw aged 61, head, farmer of 36 acres, born in Darley

   Mary Shaw aged 54, wife, born in Darley (née Shaw)

   George Shaw aged 24, farmer's son, born in Darley

   George Beastall aged 10, grandson, born in Darley (son of Thomas Valentine Beastall and Sarah Shaw)

 

John Shaw was in Rowsley after moving from Pendleton:

   John Shaw aged 51, head, farmer, born in Rowsley (d. 28/12/1860)

   Rebecca Shaw aged 48, wife, born in Borough, Derby (d. 1875)

   Phillis Shaw aged 21, daur, at home, born in Pendleton, Lancashire

   John Shaw aged 11, nephew, visitor, born in Rowsley

John Shaw snr. was a farmer and timber merchant who left a will with effects valued at under £3,000 - a lot of money at the time. His wife Rebecca, son William and Peter Newton were executors of the will.

 

William Shaw from Wensley was in Halt (Holt?) Lane, Matlock:

   William Shaw aged 45, head, labourer, born in Wensley

   Mary Shaw aged 47, wife, born in Stanton (probably Mary Wall from Youlgreave)

   Sarah Shaw aged 20, daur, unmarried, teacher, born in Wensley

   Mary Ann Shaw aged 14, daur, unmarried, servant born in Wensley

   James Shaw aged 8, son, scholar, born in Wensley

   Thomas Shaw aged 5, son, scholar, born in Wensley

   Joseph Hayes aged 51, lodger

   George Richards aged 25, lodger

 

George Shaw from Darley was also in Halt (Holt?) Lane, Matlock, in the next but one dwelling from William:

   George Shaw aged 34, head, labourer, born in Darley

   Grace Shaw aged 40, wife, born in Matlock

 

Matthias Shaw was still in Rowsley, his family growing in size:

   Matthias Shaw aged 39, head, sawyer, born in Rowsley (d. 1883)

   Ann Shaw aged 35, wife, born in Derby (d. 1890)

   Eunice Shaw aged 15, daur, at home, born in Rowsley

   William Shaw aged 13, son, sawyer, born in Rowsley

   Sarah Shaw aged 9, daur, scholar, born in Rowsley

   Ann Shaw aged 7, daur, scholar, born in Rowsley

   Mary Shaw aged 6, daur, scholar, born in Rowsley

   Matthias Shaw aged 4, son, scholar, born in Hulland, Derbyshire (d. 12/11/1864 in Rowsley)

   Samuel Shaw aged 3, son, born in Rowsley

   Fanny Shaw aged 7 months, daur, born in Rowsley

Eunice Shaw moved to Lancashire and became a domestic servant. Sarah Shaw married Joseph Fletcher. Samuel Shaw married Charlotte.

 

Young William Shaw was now a servant at the Roper household in Halt (Holt?) Lane, Matlock. He was the son of William and Mary living in the same road.

   William Shaw aged 18, hostler, born in Wensley

 

Ages above are as declared in the census but they were no longer rounded down in units of 5 years for those over 15 years old as they were in 1841.
